Ramsgate and District

Our friendly & thriving Club meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month for lunch when we have a visiting speaker and on the 3rd Wednesday for coffee when one of our members gives a talk. We meet at the Royal Temple Yacht Club, which has magnificent views looking out over the yacht marina in Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour and across the Channel towards the French coast.

Our lunches & coffee mornings with high quality speakers, our relatively large number of members and the many events we enjoy with our ladies (which include spring, autumn & Christmas dinners; outings; quiz night; pub lunches; race night and even holidays!) reflect the success of our Club.

Pictured is our President for this year Rod Thomas M.B.E. being congratulated by outgoing President Ron Dean at our A.G.M. in January. Rod thanked the Club for their confidence in electing him as Club President for 2015, which he said was a great honour and privilege. Ron had enjoyed an excellent time in office and would be a very hard act to follow. Rod thanked the outgoing Committee for all their hard work on the Club Members’ behalf, introduced members of the incoming Committee and outlined his plans for this year, which he is confident will be an enjoyable and successful one.

This year is a particularly happy & important one for our Club as we are celebrating imageour 40th Anniversary. Our most auspicious event to commemorate this was our 40th Anniversary Lunch recently held on the 4th March attended by the Vice Commodore of the Royal Temple Yacht Club, the Mayor & Mayoress of Ramsgate (pictured with President Rod), Secretary of the Rotary Club of Ramsgate and the Presidents of the Probus Clubs of Birchington, Broadstairs, Canterbury, Deal & District and Herne Bay – as well as 56 of our members.

A commemorative Anniversary booklet was prepared to coincide with this event, which incorporated the group photo taken last year and lots of interesting information about the history of the Club. A copy was given to every member.

We enjoyed a very successful St. George’s Day Ladies Dinner at the Walpole Bay Hotel on 22nd April at which, as well as the usual fun & frivolity (including singing patriotic songs), we had the pleasure of a talk by Kim Stoner, the Principal of St. Georges School, entitled “Children Are the Future”.

We’re looking forward to our next get-together, which is our Ladies 40th Anniversary Ladies Dinner on the evening of the 30th September at the Walpole Bay Hotel when we’ll be having a talk from its proprietor Jane Bishop.

Our next meeting is a special one – when we’re hosting the annual Joint Probus Clubs Lunch on the 7th October. We’ll be entertaining 35 members from 6 local Probus Clubs – Birchington, Broadstairs, Canterbury, Deal, Dover & Herne Bay. Our speaker will be Frank Martin DL, Commodore of the Royal Temple Yacht Club, who’ll be talking about developments at Dover Harbour.

If you’re a member of another Probus Club and would like to come along to one of our meetings you would be very welcome, but please let our Secretary know well in advance – contact details below.
