Newtownabbey Probus Club

PROBUS is the Association of retired and semi-retired professional and business personnel in autonomous localized clubs.

We, the Newtownabbey Probus Club, are one of hundreds of such clubs around the world. The word PROBUS is an abbreviation of the words PROfessional and BUSiness but membership is not restricted to these to groups.  It also embraces former executives of government and other organisations and, in fact, any person who had some measure of responsibility in any field of endeavour. The basic purpose of a Probus Club is to provide regular gatherings of persons who in retirement appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and similar level of interest.  There are men’s and ladies’ clubs and dual gender clubs.

We meet fortnightly on the first and third Wednesday mornings of the month for conversation, to exchange news and to listen to an interesting speaker, who may be from our own ranks or someone from outside the club. We organise outings and visits to places of interest throughout the year.

We are an all-male club, founded in 1979.  In Newtownabbey, there is also a Ladies Club which was set up in 2007.  We meet in the Scott Room at St Patrick’s Church, Jordanstown, which is near Jordanstown Railway Station on the Jordanstown Road, Newtownabbey.

From Belfast, take the M5/A2 towards Carrickfergus. Pass through Whiteabbey and, at the traffic lights opposite Loughshore Park, turn left onto the Jordanstown Road (Monkstown direction). The church is on the right, just over the railway line. (map)
